Load Task Packages onto Devices

If your site is using the automatic task-package-load feature, see Associate a Task Package with Operators

A "task package" is the process software that operators need to do the job, along with some settings specific to that software. A task package is assigned to a particular device. When an operator is loaded onto that device, the task package also is loaded.

Load a Task Package onto One or Several Devices by Selecting Devices

  1. From the VoiceConsole tab, select the Device Management tab.
  2. Under Navigation, click Devices.
  3. In the View Devices list, select the devices onto which you want to load task packages.
  4. Under Device Actions, select Common Device Actions > Load task package to selected devices.
The Load Task Package dialog box opens, listing all the task packages compatible with the selected device.
  5. From the drop-down list, select the task package to load to the devices.
  6. If necessary, select to load the task package onto the selected devices when the devices enter the sleep state and when the selected devices are placed into a charger. If you do not select this checkbox, the task package loads onto the devices only when the devices are placed into a charger.
  7. Click Load task package to devices.

Load a Task Package onto a Single Device

You can load a single task package using the procedure described above. But if you want to load only one task package, the following procedure is more efficient.

  1. In the Search Options text box, type the name or serial number of the device.
  2. Click Go.
    • If only one device matches what you typed, the properties page for that device appears.
    • If more than one device matches what you typed, a results page appears, from which you can select the desired device.
  3. Under Device Actions, select Common Device Actions > Load task package to selected devices.
The Load Task Package dialog box opens, listing all of the task packages compatible with the selected device.
  4. From the drop-down list, select the task package to load to the device.
  5. If necessary, select to load the task package onto the device when the device enters the sleep state and when the device is placed into a charger. If you do not select this checkbox, the task package loads onto the device only when the device is placed into a charger.
  6. Click Load task package to devices.

Load a Task Package onto all Devices

When you select to load a task package to all devices using this method, the task package is loaded to all the devices in your current site.

  1. From the VoiceConsole tab, select the Device Management tab.
  2. Under Navigation, click Devices.
  3. Under Device Actions, select Common Device Actions > Load task package to all devices.
The Load Task Package to all Devices dialog box opens, listing all of the task packages compatible with the devices.
  4. From the drop-down list, select the task package to load to the devices.
  5. If necessary, select to load the task package onto all the devices when the devices either enter the sleep state or when the devices are placed into a charger. If you do not select this checkbox, the task package loads onto the devices only when the devices are placed into a charger.
  6. Click Load task package to all devices.

In some versions of VoiceConsole, the Load Task Packages to all Devices action is limited to sites with less than 31 devices to improve overall performance. If a message is displayed indicating that this 30 device limit is in effect, use device groups to load devices in batches so that the 30 device limit is not exceeded.

Load a Task Package onto Devices by Selecting Device Groups

  1. From the VoiceConsole tab, select the Device Management tab.
  2. Under Navigation, click Device Groups.
  3. In the View Device Groups list, select the device groups containing the devices to which you want to load task packages.
  4. Under Device Group Actions, select Common device group actions > Load task package to selected device groups.
The Load Task Package dialog box opens, listing all of the task packages compatible with the selected devices in the device group.
  5. From the drop-down list, select the task package to load to the devices.
  6. If necessary, select to load the task package onto the devices in the selected device groups when the devices either enter the sleep state or when the devices are placed into a charger. If you do not select this checkbox, the task package loads onto the devices only when the devices are placed into a charger.
  7. Click Load task package to device groups.

If a default task package contains a task that is not compatible with one or more devices in a device group, the task package load fails on the devices that are not compatible. Ensure that you select a task package with a task type compatible with the devices in the device group and that those devices support the version of the task. Failures are listed on the View Devices Messages page for the affected devices.

  8. From the VoiceConsole tab, select the Device Management tab.
  9. Under Navigation, click Device Groups.
  10. In the View Device Groups list, select the device groups containing the devices to which you want to load the default task package.
  11. Under Device Group Actions, select Common device group actions > Load default task package for selected device groups.
The Load Default Task Package dialog box opens.
  12. If necessary, select to load the default task package onto the devices in the selected device groups when the devices either enter the sleep state or when the devices are placed into a charger. If you do not select this checkbox, the default task package loads onto the devices only when the devices are placed into a charger.
  13. Click Load default task package to device groups.
The default task package for the device group is loaded to all of the devices in the selected device group.

If you selected a task package that is not compatible with one or more devices, a warning displays, and you must select a different task package or devices.

Task Package Load Association Priority

If an operator does not have an associated task package, a task package is automatically loaded one of the following ways:

  1. If the operator’s device belongs to a device group, the default task package for the device group is loaded.
  2. If the device does not belong to a device group or the device group does not have a default task package, the last task package that the operator loaded is loaded.

If a task package meeting one of these criteria is not available, a task package is not automatically loaded to the device. The operator must load a task using the device menu.

To prevent the loading of the last used task package, set AutoTaskLoadEnable=0. The operator must load a task using the device menu.

Managing Task Package Updates

  • Moving a device into a different group triggers a Load Task Package action for all devices in the group.
  • Changing the associated task package for a group triggers a Load Task package action for all devices in the group.
  • When using the Update Task function, note that it does not immediately update the task on any existing devices. This can be an issue when the devices or operators are not frequently reloaded, such as when the site does not have many devices or operators and operators frequently use the same device. If the operator continues using the same device, the old task continues to be used. The VoiceConsole administrator or device operator must trigger the task update to refresh the task package on the device.
  • Large sites or loading many action items at once may cause slowdowns due to excessive network traffic as VoiceConsole processes the large number of action items. Consider making such large changes during a period of downtime.
